Description: Leonotus leonurus, also known as lion's ear, is a perennial shrub that's a member of the mint family. Native to South Africa, leonurus can grow 4 to 6 feet tall. It produces fuzzy, slightly fragrant flowers that may be red, orange or white, and attract butterflies and hummingbirds into the garden. Leonurus is a very low-maintenance plant and will even thrive without much water.

How to grow:
1. Place a 3-inch layer of compost on the soil around the base of the shrub each spring. Cover this with a 3-inch layer of mulch.

2. Water the leonurus only during lengthy periods of drought. The leonurus is ideal for the xeriscape garden because it really only needs to be watered once or twice, to a depth of 8 inches, during the growing season.

3. Deadhead the plant -- remove the spent flowers -- with pruning shears to encourage it to produce more blooms.

4. Pile 5 to 6 inches of mulch around the base of the leonurus one week before the first expected frost. The plant will die back naturally and the mulch will help insulate the roots. Rake up the mulch in the spring before laying down fresh compost and mulch.
