How to Sow & Plant Rose Seeds

Note: It takes about 4 weeks for the seeds to sprout, so please wait patiently.

Method 1:

 :Better Soil
 :perlite
 :vermiculite

How to select soil: In general, the soil needs to be loose and breathable with high water holding capacity, because the sprouting rate of rose seeds is low. We can use the mixed soil of vermiculitepeatsphagnaperlite and snakewood(letterwood) chips if possible. However, the weak acid soil is also available, but make sure the soil is without any foreign bodies( such as stonescrushed bricks and glass, etc)

First step:

Put the rose seeds into the warm water (about 40 degrees), after the water cool down, continue to let them soak in the water for 4-6 hours, and then, put the seeds out. Rose seeds are much easier to sprout after soaking.

Second step:

Put the rose seeds into the soil (Note: the soil needs to be loose and breathable with high water holding capacity). Generally speaking, you can sow 5~8 seeds in each container. After sprouting, keep the stronger ones depending on the development of seedlings. And it is better to keep 1~3 seedlings in addition when thinning out the rose seedlings. After sowing, cover the containers with plastic wrap (plastic film of convenient bag is also available); prick a few small holes on the plastic wrap for breathing. Then, keep the containers in the sun; maintain the temperature at about 20 degrees or so. Most of the seeds can sprout after a week. After the rose seedlings become healthy and strong, you can transplant them into the ground.

Method 2:

Rose seeds have a characteristic of dormancy, so they usually can not sprout if you sow them directly in the soil. So before sowing, it usually takes 30~50 days for stratification and accelerating sprouting. General operations are as follows:

1Stratification and accelerating sprouting

Generally speaking, stratification and accelerating sprouting are more appropriate to be proceeded in winter, because they need to happen in low-temperature environment (less than 5 ℃). First, put the rose seeds into clean water to soak for 48 hours, and then mix fully with wet sand. How to judge the proper sand moisture: Put the wet sand in your hand, then make a fist, the sand disperse when you loosen fist. The proportion of rose seeds and wet sand is 1:3. And then put them into the low-temperature environment (less than 5 ℃) for 30~50 days for stratification and accelerating sprouting. If the natural temperature can not meet the requirements, you can mix the seeds with wet sand in containers, and then place the containers in the fridge.

2Sowing

Sowing always happens in spring. Water the soil before sowing, then put the seeds(after stratification and accelerating sprouting) into the soil, cover 1 ~ 1.5 cm thick of soil. If you sow in summer, you had better put the flowerpots in the air-conditioned room, or a cool place, preferably in 20 ℃ environment.

3Management after sowing

Keep the soil moist after sowing but don’t water it frequently, get rid of the soil’s standing water. No fertilizer during sprouting. It takes about 15 days for sprouting.
